Key Purpose


The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA) makes provision for the appointment and registration of a Deputy Information Officer in each business unit of an organisation.


The Deputy Information Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with the provisions of the applicable legislation and regulations on behalf of Discovery Bank.


Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to

the encouragement of compliance by Discovery Bank with the conditions for lawful processing of personal information;

ensuring that internal awareness sessions regarding the provisions of POPIA and PAIA and codes of conduct are carried out by employees within Discovery Bank;

the development, implementation and monitoring the appropriate compliance framework ensuring data and information belonging to clients is processed internally in accordance with both POPI and PAIA;

dealing with requests for information made to Discovery Bank pursuant to POPIA and PAIA in conjunction with the Group Information Officer;

Working with the appropriate Business, Risk, IT and Information Security teams to ensure processes and systems that hold and/or process client data and information are secure and robust from a data protection perspective, including data sharing internally with Group companies or externally with e.g. 3rd party suppliers

working with the Bank Info Security, Risk and Compliance teams and, where appropriate, the Group Information Officer in relation to investigations in relation to Discovery Bank;

communication with the Information Regulator where necessary on matters related to information, privacy or access;

ensuring the documentation of processing activities regarding personal information processed within Discovery Bank;

conducting data privacy impact assessments when personal information is processed within the Discovery Bank to ensure adequate measures and standards exist to comply with conditions of lawful processing;

upon request by any person, provide copies of the Discovery Access to Information Manual to that person; and

submission of reports to the Group Information Officer regarding data subject access requests, assessments, complaints and breaches or such other information as may be required in terms of the applicable legislation.

Education And Experience

An appropriate Business or Business Science degree.

A good understanding of information technology

Professional certification in Information Privacy

Basic legal training is advantageous
